Originally from Japan, Yoko founded London-based Yoko Kloeden Design in 2014 after a career in business and traveling all over the world. Her designs focus on complementing beautiful historical elements and architectural features. And decor is influenced by her Japanese background. Color and texture flirt with each other in surprising ways, and interiors often celebrate raw materials and nature. As evidenced by the London home she shares with her family, Yoko also excels in creating stunning views between spaces, like the view of the open garden from the dining room, or the first view you see when you walk through the front door.

Kloeden describes her home’s design: “From outside, it is a typical Victorian house in London with weathered yellow bricks and trailing ivy on the wall. Once you step inside, you will find layers of natural materials—clay, marble, brass, steel, oak, walnut, to name just a few, and I chose the calming color palette I am naturally attracted to. The inspiration came from connecting with the garden and nature. My Japanese background certainly played a role in how I achieved this.

Even if the overall mood is kept serene, it is a family home with three lively children. The house breathes and grows with my family and is constantly evolving. That’s what I love most about it.”

Our Style: Emotive, tactile, inviting. I think, in today’s always-connected world with non-stop stimulation, everybody needs a nest to go back to, rest their senses, and reconnect with their family and inner self. I truly believe in the power of spaces and focus on experiences within the space rather than how it would look when it is captured in a 2D image.

Inspiration: Architecture, surroundings and the occupant’s life stories sit at the core when I design for my clients. For my home, I draw on inspiration from nature, travel, children, and all the beautiful things I come across every day.

Favorite Element: I love sitting at the dining table and gazing into the garden. Our apple tree bears loads of fruits in summer and attracts birds. Last spring, a robin nested under our ivy wall and three baby robins were born. We could hear them from the inside and watched them grow and fly away.

Biggest Challenge: Preventing the building works from absorbing all of our budget and saving enough to spend on what we see and touch on an every day basis. Our regular date nights are now at local pubs after home dinner rather than three-course meals in fancy Italian restaurants.

Proudest DIY: Shoe storage under the stairs. Our hallway is too narrow to incorporate any storage.

Biggest Indulgence: Crittall-style steel doors. They are more expensive than timber or aluminum doors but I love how they frame the garden view.

Best Advice: Think about how you want to feel, not how you want to make it look.
